People email me and post in the forum with SEO questions all the time.
Often, when they get their answer, they write back with something like, “But, so-and-so SEO guru wrote this article here at [insert stupid SEO site that prints any article they can get their hands on] which says the opposite of what you just said.”
Fine, then listen to them if you prefer.
Folks, you need to choose your SEO guru and stick with them. Who do you believe? Who makes sense? Who uses an SEO method that you can live with?
You will most definitely find conflicting info in SEO. That’s because there’s many ways to do things and get the same results in the end. The methods may be completely opposite even. But they both may certainly work to get you the results you want.
Decide what methods and processes work for you based on your readings, and then stick with the one that is a good fit. Don’t use a mixture of methods as you’ll only confuse yourself and most likely you’re results.
Anyone in the SEO biz knows that submitting pages to search engines is a useless exercise. They also know that sending spam emails to gain traffic is a senseless idiotic thing to do.
So what happens when you combine the two?
Like most people who’ve been online for awhile, I receive thousands of spam a day. A good portion of those are automated spammy link exchange requests. I generally don’t see them as my K9 spam filter does a good job of whisking them into my delete folder.
Every now and then, one slips through, or I happen to catch a glimpse of it when making sure no babies got thrown away with my spammy bathwater.
When I do end up glancing at a spam that is for useless submission services or that is telling me that “you site doesn’t show up in the search engines” (even though I’m generally #2 or #3 in Google for the highly competitive Search Engine Optimization phrase) I sometimes can’t help but write back and say something nasty.
Last night was no exception. I received a silly spam that said the following:
Hi,
My name is Matt. I saw your site while
looking through Google under “free search engine
submission services.”
I own www.stupidspammysubmissionservice.net
free search engine submissions service.
We get about 18,000 visitors per day.
You can put your link on our site for free at:
http://www.stupidspammysubmissionservice.net/infowizards/
Many of our members are looking for quality
free search engine submission services so it is
a great place to put a link
to your website.
The pages are also search engine friendly
so your listing will get spidered by
the search engines.
Any questions or other ideas how we can work
together you can reach me at info@mytoadsite.net

Yes, it is slightly amusing, I’ll admit that. I’m sure they get 18,000 visitors in a day. [cough] I don’t even think High Rankings gets that many even though according to Alexa it is one of the top 4000 sites visited on the web. (I know, I know, Alexa rankings mean squat, but I’m trying to make a point!)
As if the big traffic lie wasn’t enough, why in the world would a free submission company be seeking out other free submission companies to link with? If I really was a submission company, the last thing I’d want to link with is someone else who does the same thing as me, no?
Sadly, this is what many companies think they’re supposed to do. They search for the keywords they want to rank highly for, find all their competitors and ask if they’ll exchange links, then wonder why they aren’t getting anywhere with their link building campaign. Duh.
Anyway, I had already had a couple of glasses of wine when I received the spam, and couldn’t help but email the toad back. I wrote:
Hey Matt,
Are you an idiot or what?
Best,
Jill

Usually I don’t hear back after this. But Matt was tenacious, I’ll give him that. Not too much later I received the following reply:
Hi Jill,
I checked out your site. It looks like you
really know what you are doing with SEO.
Too bad you are so rude. I made about
300k last year on the net but I guess I
am not good enough to do business with you.
All the best,
Matt
ROFL
Yeah, too bad indeed.
But I couldn’t leave well enough alone and had to respond with:
Too bad you’re so full of shit.
Jill
Oops…my bad.
