Getting People to Think
When I was younger (like a few years ago
) I used to joke that thinking made my head hurt. In some ways it still does. Throw a complicated math formula or physics problem my way, and I’m not going to have a whole lot of desire to start thinking about it. It just doesn’t interest me, and isn’t worth the brain-power it would take.
But when it comes to something that is my passion — say SEO — I think about it all the time. To me, thinking about what a search engine would want to show in their search results for any given search query is just plain fun! It’s more like a game or a puzzle than something icky like physics or math or [heaven forbid] — work.
I’ve also found that in order to really learn something well, you can’t simply be told how to do it; you have to actually think about it a lot, and then roll up your sleeves and get down and dirty with it for awhile. Thus the tagline of this blog — “You’ll Never Learn SEO by Just Reading About it.”
This is why sometimes my answers to SEO questions in my forum and in my newsletter might seem cryptic. I’m often just trying to get people to think.
Apparently, Oprah does the same thing. I was watching David Letterman a few weeks ago when he had his big Oprah show, and she said in regards to her own talk show something to the effect of “if we can do some good for people and also make them think, then we’ve done a good job.”
I couldn’t agree more!
